Anita Yuandri Lubis, Managing Partner of ALubis Law
“Contributing to The Equality Before the Laws in Indonesia”
Based on her experience during the riot happened more than a couple of decades ago in Indonesia, Anita Yuandri Lubis decided to pursue her law degree after finishing high school. The injustice that she felt then made her wanted to become a person who could help other people, especially in the face of laws. After practicing laws for around 12 years, Anita then established her own law firm. Going backwards, Anita has worked for several prominent Indonesian law firms. In addition, she also holds master of laws degree from New York University School of Law with a full scholarship from the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (Lembaga Pengelola Dana Pendidikan/LPDP). Anita always has a solid will to contribute to the development of laws in Indonesia.
“I want to be able to take part in the development of the laws in Indonesia, especially to those who are unable to get access to legal assistance. I would like to exaggerate here that we all know that lawyers do charge certain fees and other kinds of fees that one must bear. That’s why I want to be able to take part in making the access to legal assistance in Indonesia becomes equal to every Indonesian citizen” said Anita to Women’s Obsession.
As said, Anita then established ALubis Law with a tagline as simply as efficient as possible. This tagline represents her life principles. Anita wants to form her own style in providing legal services to her clients. She understands that not all of her clients have the time necessary to attend to their cases or issues. Therefore, she determined to provide simple and efficient services. Everything must be easy to be digested, especially for laymen.
Anita is an experienced lawyer in mergers and acquisitions, insurance, and financial institutions, including FinTech. Anita said that she has a particular interest in finance law. She believes that choosing your area of practice according to your passion would make your job easier and could avoid feeling burn out. For example, if a person really likes music, they may consider becoming a copyright lawyer. As the eldest child among five siblings, Anita believes that doing something based on your passion is good to maintain our mental health. This is particularly important considering that lawyers’ works are very stressful.
When Anita was asked about the most difficult thing a lawyer could encounter, her response was “The most interesting but also not easy at the same time was when we face an unprecedented and complicated issue or transaction. We must be able to think out of the box, conduct thorough research, and be able to meet our clients’ interests and our concerns as well, including accommodating the counterparty’s interests. This is an extremely challenging matter, especially the matter or transaction is unprecedented which makes it even more complicated.”
On the other side of the fence, as a Managing Partner and Founder of ALubis Law, Anita pays huge attention to her colleagues. She observes that her colleagues work more productively from home (work-from-home/WFH) rather than coming to the office to finish their works, she then decided to continue the WFH system to date. This decision was also made considering that it is not yet fully safe for her coworkers to work from the office because of the pandemic.
“Every month I always ask my coworkers if there is something that they are unhappy about. Besides, most of them tell me that they prefer WFH because of time flexibility. Honestly, their work products are better compared to them working at the office. Therefore, I do not mind if we continue the WFH system.” Anita said. When we asked Anita about the secret to her physical and mental health, she said that she does yoga and meditation regularly. In addition, to sharpen her focus for work or daily activities, she chooses practicing diving as her ‘me time’.
